Culiacan is the capital city of the state of Sinaloa, which was founded by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán, conqueror of Nueva Galicia in 1531. The Municipal Palace is directly opposite to one of the oldest and highest cathedrals in Mexico. With a height of 226ft it consists of grand total of fourteen chapels! The construction of the Municipal Palace began around the 18th century. It actually took a lot longer then it was intended to and was not completely finish until near the end of the 19th century. Due to this long period of time, the building appeared to be divided into two individual parts representing the differences in styles of the early 18th century and the late 19th century. This difference also allows the visitors of the Municipal Palace to see just some of the changes the city of Culiacan was going through that time, artistically and architecturally. In the past, the inside of the Municipal Palace was where the seminar of Sonora. It was also once used for carrying out a myriad of government activities. These government activities continue on to present day. The Municipal Palace is now an office of government officials with some parts of the building opened to the general public.

- When touring inside the Municipal palace take a look at a magnificent mural that was painted in 1969 which depicts the long and hard struggle of the Mexican people against the Spanish repression. As well, national heroes including Jose Ma. Morelos, Galeana, Matamoros and the Insurgent Army are also depicted on the mural.
- If you go to the central balcony you can have an excellent view of the city. As well the central balcony has a beautiful square patio.
- The Mexico Independence Day is September 16, this is the day where Miguel Hidalgo delivered El Grito de Dolores, and announced the Mexican revolt against the Spanish rule. On the eve of the Mexican Independence Day at 11:00pm the mayor gives a speech on patriotism to an enthusiastic crowd. This ceremony also includes the mayor reacting actions of Miguel Hidalgo when the revolt was announced, including the ringing of the liberty bell, parts of Hidalgo's actual speech, the waving of the flag and the chanting of "Viva México". A colorful celebration is held right after with rodeos, parades, bullfights, as well as traditional Mexican dancers and singers. Houses are decorated and food is served, this is a time for families and friends to come together and to celebrate the independence of Mexico.
