Speak like a pro

When you are visiting with your Mexico car hire, there are a few general rules about pronunciation that will make your stay a little easier, even if you don't speak Spanish.

• ñ like the ni in senior
• e like the e in deck
• o like the o in cold
• y like the ea in eat
• ll like the y in kayak

The h is silent in Spanish, and the Spanish j is pronounced like the h in horse. G before a, o, u, or a consonant is hard (like in gate); when before e or i, it's soft, sounding just slightly harder than the h in hay.

Words ending with an o take the masculine form- ex. Senorito

Words ending with an a take the feminine form- ex. Senorita

The informal you is used when talking to close friends, relatives, animals or children. The formal you is used when talking to someone you just met, do not know well, or someone for whom you would like to show respect (a professor, for example.) There are also two ways to say you in the plural, used when speaking to more than one person.
